Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills will be exercised as a first approach to the Portuguese language.
Introduction to the structure of the Portuguese Language, Comparative approach of Portuguese and Chinese. The characteristics of Portuguese. Introduction to Portuguese Grammar.
Students will become acquainted with the Portuguese alphabet and the letters corresponding to different phonemes, the use of written accents and other graphic signs. Transcription and dictation exercises, development of sentences and small texts.
Development of fluency and communicative competence based on texts and videos that provide information on aspects of the Portuguese speaking countries.
Acquisition of simple Portuguese structures, including the verb system and all types of inflection in Portuguese, gradual development of level of complexity. Implicit grammar comprehension.
Intermediate language laboratory training and practice in accurate pronunciation and production, including intonation of sentences.
Translation exercises, both oral and written, of phrases and short sentences. Greetings, requests for information, etc.
Elementary phonetics rules. Contrastive phonetics of Portuguese and Chinese. Practice of sounds, words, word groups, phrases, sentences. Intonation in Portuguese. Practice in Language Lab.
Year 2
General theories of translation applied to written and oral Portuguese-Chinese texts (Continuation). Examination and analysis of some reference translations; review of procedures and evaluation of the major questions and issues that arise.
Practice of writing essays on selected topics (II). Analysis of selected texts (models). Practice of summary and abstract writing.
Documents and formal letters will be translated paying special attention to standard templates and also to cultural issues including those related to the ways of addressing people, etc. This is a very dynamic course and students will be stimulated to search cultural lexical equivalents.
Development of fluency and communicative competence based on texts and videos that provide information on several complex issues related to the Portuguese speaking countries.
Basic theory of interpretation, and practical interpretation of short conversations on relevant topics and short formal speeches.
This subject aims to familiarise the students with computer aided translation and its risks. Different approaches will be undertaken to show students how helpful a computer translator can be and how far from perfection computer translation still is.
Enhancing the knowledge and mastery of traditional (classical) Chinese texts.
In this final practical module students will complete a work practice. Students will be expected to take the lead responsibility for undertaking certain tasks, whilst still under the supervision of an experienced professional and a university tutor. Students will utilise the skills and knowledge acquired in the modules so far studied. Whether in schools, libraries, communication media, or offices or companies, students will apply their skills in the Portuguese language, in supporting tasks or people. As an alternative, students can develop a project, under the supervision of a university tutor, directly concerned with skills, procedures, contents and issues contemplated in the course.
Practical course aiming to improve writing skills, dealing with the structure of the Portuguese Language. Notions of semantics, style, and syntax of oral and written texts. Preparation of bilingual templates for translation.
This course aims to familiarise students with different writing methods and skills in order to develop their ability in writing appropriate Chinese. A diverse variety of writing styles, such as practical, expository and argumentative writing, is discussed and emphasised.
This subject aims to provide students with a systematic overview of Portuguese grammar and its diversity in the different Lusophone countries. Explicit grammar will help students to seek referential support when they have doubts.
