USJ’s PIRO and OSAA attended a virtual conference organised by HKU, HKBU, SJTU and HKUST on the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, approaches to tackling and turning those challenges into opportunities, and the future of internationalisation.

On November 13th, 2020, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), represented by the Director of the Public and International Relations Office (PIRO), Mrs. Paula Mota, the Director of the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA), Ms. Teresa Loong, and PIRO International Relations Officer, Miss Joana Costa, attended a virtual conference on the topic of “Online Internationalisation – Meeting the Challenge of Student Mobility in a Global Pandemic”. The event was organised by The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

Participants were welcomed by Prof. Xiang Zhang, HKU President and Vice-Chancellor, before the event kicked off with two keynote sessions:

  • Prof. Betty Leask, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at La Trobe University, on “Internationalisation in a Global Pandemic”; and
  • Dr. Darla Deardorff, Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators and Research Scholar at Duke University, on “Student Mobility and Their Intercultural Development”.

Next, a panel with students from each of the organising institutions featured the innovative international and intercultural work students have done “at home” before concurrent sessions on different internationalisation-related topics were facilitated by several speakers.

After a short break, institutional leaders Dr. Albert Chau, HKBU’s Vice-President for Teaching and Learning; Prof. Anirban Mukhopadhyay, HKUST Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning; Prof. Xuemin Xu, SJTU Vice-President for Education and International Affairs; and Prof. Ian Holliday, HKU Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, had an interesting discussion on their own perspectives of internationalisation pre-, during and post-pandemic, before the event concluded with two final keynote sessions:
