USJ Macao will host an International Symposium from June 26 – 29, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First Council for China, held in Shanghai in 1924. This was the first plenary council of the Catholic Church in China.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao is organising and hosting an International Symposium from June 26 – 29, 2024 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First Council for China (Primum Concilium Sinense) held in Shanghai in 1924. This was the first plenary council of the Catholic Church in China.
In 1924, Pope Pius XI’s Apostolic Delegate to China, Celso Costantini, gathered bishops, Vicars and Prefects Apostolic, religious provincials and superiors, and priests from all parts of China in the city of Shanghai for the Council for China. The Shanghai Council, solemnly inaugurated on 14 May and concluded on 12 June, was the first plenary Council in the history of the Catholic Church in China. Members of different nationalities and religious orders contributed to the issue of decrees on various aspects of ecclesiastical life in China. The decrees had a significant influence on evangelisation in the following decades.
The “International Symposium on the Centenary of the First Council for China (1924-2024)” aims to explore the history and significance of this First Council for China from diverse perspectives, including historical, theological, missiological, and interdisciplinary approaches. Scholars and experts from across the region will gather to share their knowledge and perspectives on this important event in the history of the Catholic Church in China.
This Symposium is sponsored by the Macao Foundation.
