Public Lecture | ELF and Global Englishes: Implications for Educators

30

Oct

The Public Lecture “ELF and Global Englishes: Implications for educators” will take place on the 30th October in Classroom 104 of the USJ Ilha Verde Campus.

About the Talk:

Macau has become a multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multilingual society where English in some contexts enjoys equal status with Chinese and Portuguese: the two official languages of the city. And with the rapid globalization of the 21st century, there has been significant transformations in how English functions across different regions and contexts. This lecture delves into the concept of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and the broader framework of Global Englishes.  Unlike traditional views that promote a single, standardized form of English, Global Englishes recognizes the diversity of English usage worldwide, shaped by cultural, social, and linguistic contexts.

This session aims to equip future educators with practical ways on how to foster an inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that respects the fluidity and variability of English use globally. It is hoped that this lecture will ultimately empower the future educators in preparing their students for an interconnected world where English serves as a bridge, not a barrier, across cultures.
