USJ students from years 3 and 4 of the Bachelor of Design attended the opening of the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection 1998-2024 Exhibition at the Arts Pavilion West Kowloon in Hong Kong.

The exhibition showcased more than 100 products presented over 25 years at the SaloneSatellite, offering an invaluable learning experience for our aspiring designers. It allowed students to engage directly with cutting-edge design projects that embody creativity and forward-thinking approaches to design.

The SaloneSatellite Exhibition is globally recognised as the first and most important platform to showcase the works of young designers under 35. Prof. Nuno Soares, the Head of USJ’s Department of Architecture and Design, was selected to participate in this world-class event for four years, from 2007 to 2010, with his furniture system, ConstrAction, alongside Prof. Filipa Simões, the Programme Coordinator of the Bachelor of Design.

The exhibition provided an excellent setting for University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) design students to gain insights and inspiration. Edmond Ip, a year 4 student of the Bachelor of Design, considered the visit “an eye-opening experience.” Marco Cheang, also a graduating student, said the exhibition “provided an incredible opportunity to see actual products up close, deepening my understanding of design intricacies and materials, which has greatly informed my approach as a designer and inspired me to create more innovative solutions in my future projects.”

MJ Bumactao, a year 3 student, observed, “It was clear to see the passion for design in the people who attended the exhibition. To have that drive, I find that it’s important to surround yourself with people who inspire you”. David Casamayor, also a year 3 student, noted that “To know and understand the present scene in furniture design is important to know your place as a designer and how to keep evolving and improving.”

Students had the opportunity to meet and interact with established designers, gaining insights into industry trends and practices. The opening event was attended by the founder and curator of SaloneSatellite, Marva Griffin Wilshire, as well as the President and General Manager of Salone del Mobile.Milano, Maria Porro and Marco Sabetta.

The study visit is part of the Department of Architecture and Design’s commitment to fostering a comprehensive education, providing practical and inspiring educational experiences that integrate real-world experiences into the academic curriculum.
