The Public Lecture “Industrial Heritage Tourism in Macau: The case of Iec Long Firecracker Factory”, will take place on December 4 at Rui Cunha Foundation.
About the Talk:
Iec Long (益隆) means a fortunate enterprise, and for nearly seventy years the firecracker industry was considered one of the three pivotal industries in Macau. The second largest firecracker factory in Macau was closed in 1984 and reopened in 2022 with a new set of meanings given to the place. While gaming is Macau’s key industry, associated with tourism – there has been a set of measures and initiatives aimed at rebranding Macau as a cultural tourism destination.
This talk will focus on the case of Iec Long and aims to summarize some findings of a collaborative study of Macau based scholars and to stimulate discussion with wider range of experts and public on how heritage is being reinvented for local and tourist use in China (Macau). How can we use the ideas of ambience and ruins to understand new tourist experiences and tourist culture? What are the key elements to consider when we discuss industrial heritage, its preservation and reuse?
