ABOUT THE TALK
At the mention of exceptional abilities, IQ and giftedness come to mind. However, the term exceptional ability refers to that capability of an individual who can achieve at a level of capacity that is significantly in advance of his/her peer group. In mainstream schools, students with exceptional abilities are always considered academically gifted and/or talented with a high level of intelligence or an IQ score of more than 130 or in the 98th percentile range. However, this is not always the case.
There are those whose exceptional abilities are found in non-academic areas and they possess the inherent inclination to react intensely to individually different stimuli and hence, amplify socio-emotional growth.
Termed as overexcitabilities by Kazimierz Dabrowski (b.1902-d.1980), there are five categories of overexcitabilities that are manifested in different forms of socio-emotional behavioral challenges: psychomotor, sensual, intellectual,
imaginational and emotional intensities. A clear understanding of these overexcitabilities will help teachers to better understand why their students with exceptional abilities are behaving in certain ways or manners.

Dr Lim has been actively involved in special needs education for more than twenty years, often as an invited speaker and presenter at national and international conferences and seminars. He runs a special needs consultancy providing support for families with children with special needs through such services as initial screening of children, youths and adults suspected of disabilities and disorders;
psycho-educational and behavioral assessments of children and young adults for developmental disabilities; learning difficulties; emotional and behavioral difficulties. In addition, Dr Lim also provides Access Arrangement, i.e., special provisions to students with disabilities attending international schools in preparation for international examinations. Dr Lim also conducts parent support training programs, student behavior management, and professional development and training for teachers, therapists and post-graduate students.
