The 2019-2020 Social Work Exchange Programme – Frontiers Social Work Practice in Taiwan

University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has a deep, rich, and longstanding partnership with Fu Jen Catholic University (FJCU) in Taiwan. This relationship has served as the foundation for department of social work at USJ’s international initiatives in Taiwan, where we had the exchange programme to students and opportunities for faculty and students alike in December 22-28, 2019.

Social work field in Taiwan has been developed well. Fu Jen Catholic University, department of socialwork has been closely bound up with the social welfare service system and especially with social welfare work at local level. We took this opportunity to do some collaborations between the two, which benefit faculty members and students of both sides.

The 2019-2020 Social Work Exchange Programme – Frontiers Social Work Practice in Taiwan run for 7 days in December 2019, which was funded by Higher Education Fund and Macau Foundation. Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) organised a group of 15 students and 2 faculty members. Students must have completed their foundation year. Prof. Helen Liu and Prof. Michael Lai led a group.

It was a very enriching experience to have this exchange. The group discussion included social issues within the two places, Macao and Taiwan, and how these presented differently in the two different cultures. Two workshops were taught by faculty members at FJCU and had many opportunities to visit seven different social service agencies in Taipei and New Taipei City in Taiwan with the students. Part of the exchange programme were workshops and part of the programme were visiting agencies and interact with service users. The outcome of the programme was to enlarge the visions of social work professions taking care of local needs and wider concerns and challenges.
