USJ Design Graduate receives "Innovative Furniture Certificate for Concept Design"

Mr. Jerry U, U Seng Hei, Design graduate student of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Creative Industries, was awarded with the “Innovative Furniture Certificate for Concept Design” in the 2020 Foshan Mayor Cup Industrial Design Competition.



On the 30th of December 2020, Mr. Jerry U (U Seng Hei), Design Graduate student of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Creative Industries, was awarded with an “Innovative Furniture Certificate for Concept Design” in the 2020 Foshan Mayor Cup Industrial Design Competition, organised by the Foshan People’s Government.

The nation-wide competition attracted the participation of various industrial designers and students from all over China. A total of 3801 works were collected, and 571 shortlisted, including 372 in the Concept Design category with only 50 works selected.

The selected design product, titled “M3 BOX”, a multifunctional furniture that unfolds into either a dining table, a workstation or a coffee table, was a graduation project of Mr. Jerry U, under the guidance of Prof. Filipa Simões and Prof. Carlos Sena Caires, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The Graduation Project is a full-year development work that brings to completion the students’ journey on the Design Bachelor. This year, students were asked to develop their research under the main conceptual theme of “Deconstructivist Design”.

The graduation masterpiece is now exhibited permanently at the Guangdong Home Design Valley, in Longjiang Shunde, and registered Design and Utility model patents under the National Intellectual Property Protection.

A special thanks to Prof. Vincent Ho, Visiting Academic of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who helped with all the procedures for the final submission and patent registration.
