Exploring Glycan Molecules For Tissue Repair

22

Jun

The Institute of Science and Environment of USJ will hold an online public lecture “Exploring Glycan Molecules For Tissue Repair” on the 22nd June 2021.

About the Talk:

Macrophages, traditionally known as chief defenders of our body, play essential roles in tissue repair. Because their phenotype is highly plastic, it may be feasible to regulate their functions and harness their power to aid tissue regeneration. Inspired by microbial signals, our team have devised a series of glucomannan polymers in various shapes and forms to target carbohydrate-recognising receptors on macrophages – e.g. toll-like receptors (TLRs). These polymers can stimulate macrophages to secrete different sets of cytokines, with their structure-activity relationship investigated. Our long-term goal is to translate these glycans into therapeutic tools for regenerative medicine.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Chunming Wang (CM) received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Biochemistry from Nanjing University (China), completing his Master thesis under the supervision of Junfeng Zhang. He obtained his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) under the supervision of Dong-An Wang. Then, CM undertook his postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge (UK), working between Wilhelm Huck’s group in the Chemistry Department and Fiona Watt’s lab at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research. In Oct 2012, CM took the Assistant Professorship to start his independent research at ICMS, University of Macau, and was promoted to Associate Professor in Aug 2018. He has published 100 research papers in recognised journals, including Nature CommunicationsCell Reports and Science Advances, and supervised 10+ national or Macau research projects as PI. He was awarded Outstanding Youth Science Fund by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), UK, and admitted as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), UK. His recent research focuses on cell- or immuno-therapy for tissue repair.
