The Institute of Science and Environment of USJ will hold an online public lecture titled “Contributions (and “Limitations”) of Mangroves in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Programs” on November 11, 2021.
ABOUT THE TALK:
Mangroves are recognised for several ecological and socio-economic services (ES) it provides. They are an important nature-based solution (NbS) needed to address various socio-environmental challenges. Mangroves are an integral component in the climate change adaptation and mitigation (CCAM) program. However, the effectiveness of mangroves in CCAM depends on its extent and state of ecosystem health. When “healthy” (as opposed to “degraded” or “disturbed”), mangroves are expected to provide substantial ES. The recent State of the World Mangroves report acknowledges that the losses of mangroves were slowed. In most Asian countries however, there are still reports on mangrove degradation and losses caused by natural and anthropogenic disturbances. These reports have wide local/national and regional variations. If effectively managed, the degraded mangroves can be restored to recover its ES and contribute in CCAM program. This study aims to provide a review of potential contributions (as well as limitations) of mangroves in CCAM program and in line with the campaign for United Nations’ Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Severino Salmo III is a restoration ecologist and presently an Associate Professor at the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines. He has a PhD degree in Biological Science from the University of Queensland, Australia and post-doctoral stint at the University of the Ryukyus – Tropical Biosphere Research Center, Okinawa, Japan. His research is mainly focused on the biology, ecology, conservation, biodiversity, sediment dynamics, carbon stock and sequestration rate, environmental change (mainly sea level rise), community participation, Marine Protected Area, environmental planning, and management of mangroves forests. He has extensive publications in this research area and is currently associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Marine Science (Global Change and the Future Ocean).
