University of Saint Joseph and Universidade Lusófona de Cabo Verde signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 15 November, 2021.
The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), represented by its Rector, Reverend Professor Stephen Morgan, and the Universidade Lusófona de Cabo Verde, represented by its Rector, Professor Doctor Carlos Alberto, took place on 15th November 2021, in a hybrid format.
The ceremony had the participation of other members of both institutions, from USJ, the Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Strategic Development, Professor Álvaro Barbosa and Manager of International Relations, Mrs Ana Paula Mota, from Universidade Lusófona de Cabo Verde, the Vice-Rector Mr José Manuel Tavares, the Administrator Mrs Filomena Martins, the Director of Services Mrs Osvaldina Ramos, the Director of the Rector’s Office, Mr António Duarte and the Assistant of the Rectorie, Ms Jacqueline Duarte.
This MoU, being the first of USJ with a Higher Education Institution in Cabo Verde, contemplates, among other initiatives, the exchange of students, teachers, scientific research projects and cultural activities between both universities.
During the ceremony, USJ Rector quoted the message by His Excellency the President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Xi Jinping, during the ceremony of the 20th anniversary of the transfer of Macao’s sovereignty to the PRC, where he highlighted that “Macao has an important role as a platform for cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries”.
USJ Rector also reaffirmed the position and character of USJ, and the historical similarities between the two institutions, which further reinforces the mission of the USJ to bring together and likewise foster academic partnerships with Higher Education Institutions in Portuguese-speaking Countries. He concluded that the partnership now signed will enable the mobility of students and staff in the future between the two institutions. He also stressed that this kind of initiative would strengthen academic relations between Macao and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Teve lugar no passado dia 15 de Novembro de 2021, em formato híbrido, a cerimónia de assinatura do Memorando de Entendimento entre a Universidade de São José (USJ), representada pelo Reverendo Professor Stephen Morgan e a Universidade Lusófona de Cabo Verde, representada pelo Professor Doutor Carlos Alberto Delgado, Magníficos Reitores de ambas as instituições do ensino superior.
A cerimónia de assinatura contou também com a presença de outros membros de ambas as instituições; pela USJ, o Vice-Reitor para a Internacionalização e Desenvolvimento Estratégico, Professor Doutor Álvaro Barbosa e a Sra. Coordenadora das Relações Internacionais, Dra. Ana Paula Mota; pela Universidade Lusófona de Cabo Verde, o Vice-Reitor, Mestre José Manuel Tavares, a Administradora, Dra. Filomena Martins, a Directora dos Serviços, Dra. Osvaldina Ramos, o Director do Gabinete do Reitor, Dr. António Duarte, e a Secretária da Reitoria, Dra. Jacqueline Duarte.
Este Memorando, sendo o primeiro da USJ com uma Instituição de Ensino Superior daquele país, contempla entre outras iniciativas, o intercâmbio de estudantes, docentes, projectos de investigação científica e actividades culturais entre ambas as universidades.
No seu discurso, durante a cerimónia de assinatura do Memorando de Entendimento, o Magnífico Reitor da USJ citou a mensagem por Sua Excelência o Presidente da República Popular da China, Xi Jinping, aquando da cerimónia de celebração do vigésimo aniversário da transferência de soberania de Macau para a República Popular da China onde o mesmo enalteceu que “Macau tem um papel importante como plataforma para cooperação entre a China e os Países de Língua Portuguesa.”
O Magnífico Reitor da USJ reafirmou o posicionamento, o carácter da USJ, as similaridades históricas existentes entre as duas instituições, que reforça ainda mais a missão da USJ na aproximação e desenvolvimento de parcerias académicas junto de Instituições de Ensino Superior dos Países de Língua Portuguesa. Concluiu que a parceria agora firmada possibilitará no futuro a mobilidade de alunos e staff, entre as duas instituições. Salientou ainda que, esta iniciativa acaba por reforçar as relações académicas entre Macau e os Países de Língua Portuguesa.
