Short Bio
Tânia Ribeiro Marques holds a Master Degree in Portuguese as Second Language/Foreign Language Studies by Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Porto with research in oral expression and interaction assessment. Due to her strong interest in Language Assessment Tânia also had professional training in the field by ALTE – Association of Language Testers in Europe, and participated in international conferences under the same subject. With a strong interest in Education and Teaching she also holds an Advanced Studies Diploma in Languages Teaching – Multilingualism and Education for a Global Citizenship from NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities with Universidade Aberta (UAb) in Lisbon, Portugal. Being passionate about language sciences, Tânia decided to deepen her knowledge in the linguistic field, an area that she started studying during her bachelor degree and she is currently doing her PhD research in Studies of Language Sciences, field of Linguistics in Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Porto. Her main interests in the Linguistic field, besides Applied Linguistics to Language Teaching, are in the specific areas of Forensic Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis.
Tânia started her career as a Portuguese Instructor teaching Conversation and Writing classes in School of Arts and Humanities of University of Lisbon and after that first experience, she worked with several universitarian and non universitarian institutions in Portugal as European Language School, CCL – ISCTE or IEFP where she taught Portuguese as foreign and mother tongue. From 2008 to 2015 taught Portuguese as a Foreign Language in Portuguese Language and Culture Department/Institute of Portuguese Culture and Language of the School of Arts and Humanities of University of Lisbon. Simultaneously Tânia Ribeiro Marques taught Professional Language and Communication Module in DEI – Computer Engineering Department of Technical University of Lisbon and Portuguese as a Foreign Language at Atlântica University of Lisbon. From 2015 to 2020 she was a lecturer at IPOR – Instituto Português do Oriente, Macao and currently she takes a position as Senior Lecturer at University of Saint Joseph where she is also the Head of the Department of Languages and Culture of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Year 2 PGDE
Este módulo foi concebido para equipar os futuros professores com as capacidades e estratégias necessárias para ensinar alunos do nível secundário de ensino. Neste curso os estudantes aprendem como identificar expectativas de aprendizagem adequadas aos estudantes do ensino secundário e como avaliar os resultados da aprendizagem. Salientar-se-á o uso de métodos e estratégias adequados à faixa etária e às necessidades educativas dos alunos. A importância de envolver os alunos numa variedade de actividades educativas, bem como de diversificar os instrumentos de avaliação dos mesmos, será colocada em destaque. O contributo da família na aprendizagem do adolescente será analisado, bem como as relações entre a escola e a comunidade.
Year 1 Bachelor
Elementary phonetics rules. Contrastive phonetics of Portuguese and Chinese. Practice of sounds, words, word groups, phrases, sentences. Intonation in Portuguese.
Introduction to the structure of the Portuguese Language, Comparative approach of Portuguese and Chinese. The characteristics of Portuguese. Introduction to Portuguese Grammar.
Students will become acquainted with the Portuguese alphabet and the letters corresponding to different phonemes, the use of written accents and other graphic signs. Transcription and dictation exercises, development of sentences and small texts.
Development of fluency and communicative competence based on texts and videos that provide information on aspects of the Portuguese speaking countries.
Acquisition of simple Portuguese structures, including the verb system and all types of inflection in Portuguese, gradual development of level of complexity. Implicit grammar comprehension.
Year 2 Bachelor
Practical course aiming to improve writing skills, dealing with the structure of the Portuguese Language. Notions of semantics, style, and syntax of oral and written texts. Preparation of bilingual templates for translation.
Year 3 Bachelor
Practice of writing of essays on selected topics. Analysis of selected texts (models). Practice of summary and abstract writing.
Practical course aiming to improve reading, understanding and writing skills (Continuation). Dealing with the structure of the Portuguese Language. Notions of Semantics, Style; the syntax of oral and written texts.

The course provides an advanced, detailed revision of all major areas of Portuguese grammar: agreement; noun phrase structure (with attention to article and pronominal use); preposition phrase; verb phrase structure; verb tense, aspect and mood; conjunction; subordinate clauses (including relative clauses, noun clauses and adverbial clauses); and comparative structures.
The course develops and builds on the Portuguese language skills acquired at previous levels. Students will continue to refine and expand aural, oral and written skills, through exposure to different varieties of Portuguese and different social registers and diverse text genres.
Year 4 Bachelor
This subject aims to familiarize the students with issues and perception and values related to the Lusophone countries. There will be a selection of short stories and poems written in Portuguese from different Portuguese Speaking Countries. The main goal is to train students to read fluently, to understand meanings and insights, and to appreciate and enjoy rethoric proccedures and different approaches to reality.
In this final practical module students will complete work practice. In this module, students will be expected to take the lead responsibility for undertaking some tasks, whilst still under the supervision of an experienced professional and a university tutor. Students will utilise the skills and knowledge acquired in the modules. Whether in schools, libraries, communication media, or offices or companies, students should put to a test their skills in the Portuguese language, in supporting tasks or people. In alternative, students can develop a project, with the supervision of a university tutor, directly concerned with skills, procedures, contents and issues contemplated in the course.
The course revises and consolidates at an advanced level of Portuguese language skills. While continuing to stress the four fundamental skills, the course will give particular emphasis to advanced writing and reading competence.
The module provides an overview of the modern Portuguese-speaking countries, concentrating on society, administration, economy and international relations.
This module explores current global issues and their impact on the world’s resources, the environment and human societies. The focus will be on several key issue areas in the field, such as globalization, security, trade and poverty, migration, urbanization and demographics, health and the environment.
In this module students will complete work practice by intership, or complete a translation project. Students will be expected to take the lead responsibility for undertaking tasks, whilst under the supervision of an experienced professional and a university tutor. Students will utilise the skills and knowledge acquired in the modules. Whether in schools, libraries, communication media, or offices or companies, students should put to a test their skills in the Portuguese language, in supporting tasks or people. As an alternative, with the supervision of a university tutor, students can develop a translation project, directly concerned with skills, procedures, contents and issues contemplated in the course, on a topic and area chosen by the student in consultation with the instructors.
