The Green Committees of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the British Chamber of Commerce in Macao (Britcham Macao) successfully held the “World Environment Day 2022” on the 5th of June, 2022, aimed to promote environmental preservation and enhancement.
The Green Committees of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the British Chamber of Commerce in Macao (Britcham Macao) organised the “World Environment Day 2022” on the 5th of June, 2022, at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus. The event was held in observance of the United Nations (UN) World Environment Day, celebrated annually on the 5th of June, to promote environmental preservation and enhancement, with this year’s theme “Only One Earth.”
The event consisted of an afternoon of activities and learning experiences to encourage environmental protection awareness on issues like marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption, and wildlife crime among the local community.
During the welcoming speech, Britcham Macao Chairman Keith Buckley said: “All of us should be thinking of what each one of us can do as individuals to save our world … we may make our own little contributions in our own way.”
Following, USJ Rector, Prof. Stephen Morgan added that “there are 7 billion of us and if we all reform, if we all convert our lifestyles to be aware of putting less strain on the limited home that we have, things will change … couldn’t change overnight, of course, but they change remarkably quickly when you look back.” He added that the process of changing people’s mentality towards the environmental protection goals would allow everyone to see that “there is only one earth that we all share as our home.”
The event featured a series of talks that included the topics of waste reduction in Macao by local eco-activist Ms. Annie Lo, environmental and health risks of microplastics by post-doctoral researcher at ISE/USJ Dr.. Sara Cardoso, and mangroves as a source of conventional plastic degrading and bioplastic producing bacteria by doctoral student at ISE/USJ Mr. Muhammad Bashir Saidu. Prof. Thomas Lei and Prof. Karen Tagulao from the Institute of Science and Environment of USJ (ISE/USJ) were also present with a demonstration about mangroves and air pollution.
Lupia Lupia, founded by USJ Design alumnus and artist Ms. Nelma Silvestre, also brought Hac Sa beach to the campus on the day, including a sand-pit filled with used toys for kids to play with, along with artworks made of collected plastics and waste materials from Hac Sa beach were on display.
Local SME’s and NGO’s were also invited to share and promote their services, and sustainable products, including Macau For Waste Reduction, Sustaincia, Mighty Greens Macau, The Blissful Carrot, Trigod’ouro, Less is More Macau, Mimocean, and Lyllon skincare.
