The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) kicked started its new 2022/23 academic year with a series of activities during the first 2 weeks of September, including Orientation Day for undergraduate and graduate students, along with a guided tour and a welcoming ceremony for the new Mainland students.

The 2022 University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Orientation Day was held on September 1, 2022, to welcome all first-year undergraduate students of the 2022/2023 academic year and introduce them to the USJ campus life.

Organised by the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) and supported by student ambassadors and the USJ Student Association (USJSA), new students from undergraduate programmes and some from postgraduate levels participated in the event, as well as senior students from each faculty and academic and administrative staff.

The opening session was held at the Fátima Auditorium, where Ms. Teresa Loong, Director of OSAA, warmly welcomed all new students, followed by introductory sessions from the Information Systems Office (ISO), the Library and OSAA. Student representative, Ms Peony Lam, also shared how to enrich their campus lives and experiences by seizing every opportunity during their study at USJ.

The orientation day also provided information for the new students to ease their transition into a university environment through the afternoon sessions where academic staff from each faculty met with their new students. They gave insightful advice on how to prepare for their studies. Besides acquiring useful information, it was a great opportunity for students to get to know each other and build their social network. The event ended with a guided campus tour.

Meanwhile, the Orientation for new Master degree students was held on September 5 and 6 at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima.

Furthermore, USJ has received its first-ever full cohort of Mainland students this academic year, including Master degree students in Architecture, Design, and Business Administration, and a doctoral degree student in Information Systems. The OSAA organised a guided tour around Macao historical center on September 2 for the new mainland students, where they learned about the local culture and traditions.

A welcoming ceremony was held to mark such a historical event for USJ, on September 6, at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery, with the presence of USJ’s vice-rector Prof. Keith Morrison and vice-rector Prof. Zhang Shugang, on behalf of the Rector Prof. Stephen Morgan. “Almost exactly one year ago, we were delighted to be able to move forward in fulfilling the wishes of President Xi and of our Rector, as, in September last year, the Chinese Ministry of Education gave the University of Saint Joseph permission to accept students from mainland China, and today we are able to welcome to the university our first full cohort of students from mainland China, to study architecture, business administration, information systems, and design.” Prof.Morrison.  Guests attending the ceremony include Mr. Xu Zhiping, Deputy Director of the University Office under the Education and Youth Affairs Department of Liaison Office, Mr. Teng Sio Hong, Deputy Director of Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEDJ), and Mr. Sam Hio Tong, from the Division of Quality Assurance of DSEDJ. Mr. Teng and Mr.Xu encouraged students to be more proactive in participating student activities and learn more about Macao’s multi-culture through integrating in the community. Selena Xian, representative of the Mainland students of 2021, shared her experience and wisdom of words being in the USJ family.
