The Institute of Science and Environment will hold a ISE Science Seminars: Plastic Pollution Series on 25 November and 5 December 2022.
Recycling and waste reduction in Macau through community engagement activities
ABOUT THE TALK:
The talk will discuss why it is essential to reduce waste and the city’s challenges with recycling. It will highlight how we can improve the recycling situation from a citizen level and influence the public to get involved and be part of the solution for a greener Macao we all want to live in.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Annie Lao is the co-founder of Macau for Waste Reduction. In August 2018, she took the lead in launching an online petition with a group of friends, promoting the ban of single-use plastics in Macau. In early 2019, she set up “Macau for Waste Reduction” with a group of like-minded friends, a monthly community recycling activity aiming to educate the public on proper recycling, improve Macao’s recycling system, and promote waste reduction.

Reduction of plastic waste through clean recycling
ABOUT THE TALK:
This lecture will provide a brief introduction to plastic pollution. The participants will understand the impact of plastic pollution on the ocean, marine ecosystem, and fishery. The speaker will share the experience of coastal cleanup, the most common litter found along the Macau coastline, and the organization’s recent efforts to educate the public and business units to reduce plastic waste through clean recycling.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Un Ka Hou (Rix) is an environmental educator and the president of Green Future, a local non-profit organization in Macao. He lives a low-carbon lifestyle and has been devoted to environmental education since 2012. Rix regularly delivers talks to promote the importance of eco lifestyle, plastic reduction, plant-based diet, etc., to the local communities. He is currently managing several projects and educational campaigns focusing on clean recycling.
