The USJ Chaplaincy led the commemoration of the Passion and Death of Christ with the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) on the 31st March of 2023 at the Holy Cross Chapel, Ilha Verde Campus.
The devotion was presided over by Fr. Jasper Janello A. Santos, IVE, a student of the USJ School of Education. Assisted by two other students, Fr. Santos led the procession of the cross around the fourteen stations in the Chapel, which are the images depicting the events leading up to the death and burial of the Lord Jesus.
The congregation composed of USJ and Colégio Diocesano de São José (CDSJ) 6 students and staff proceeded from station to station, with the first being the sentencing of Christ to death by Pontius Pilate, to the fourteenth, which meditates on Jesus’ burial, stopping at each to reflect and pray. The reading of the prayers in each station was led by Sister Maria Shan Dao Zhi Mu, SSVM, along with some members of the congregation.
In the evening of the same day, students and staff gathered at the student lounge to watch the award-winning and Oscar nominee “The Passion of the Christ” which was directed by Mel Gibson and illustrated Jesus Christ’s final sufferings on the earth. One of the USJ viewers expressed that the movie is very impressive.
By reflecting on Christ’s suffering and crucifixion, both praying of the Stations of the Cross and watching of “The Passion of the Christ” facilitate a spiritual and cultural journey, respectively, to better prepare for the Holy Week and Eastertide ahead.
The Way of the Cross is one of the activities organised by the University in observance of the Lenten Season, along with the Ash Wednesday Liturgy and the Lenten Retreat 2023.
