Public Lecture | Heritage Conservation and Sustainable Urban Development

26

Apr

The Public Lecture “Heritage Conservation and Sustainable Urban Development” hosted by the USJ Research Laboratory for Cultural Sustainability will take place on Wednesday, 26 April.

About the Talk:

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognise the critical role of culture and cultural heritage in achieving the SDGs. Two requirements for heritage management to play this role: heritage management practices must conform to the principles of sustainable development, and they must contribute towards achieving sustainable development goals beyond a heritage site’s boundaries. Despite early policy discussions focusing on SDGs related to heritage management, it became apparent that policies alone were insufficient to encourage adopting sustainable heritage management practices. UNESCO’s 2019 publication, Thematic Indicators for Culture in the 2030 Agenda, provides the cultural sector with a framework for assessing the role of culture as a sector and its transversal contribution to different policy areas. Looking at Macao, this presentation explores the critical aspects of integrating heritage conservation into the development framework of historical cities based on the Thematic Indicators.
