The Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy will hold a Public Lecture on The Legacy of Pope Benedict XVI (1927-2022) titled “A Glimpse of Joseph Ratzinger’s Theology of Creation, Sin, and Redemption: Reviewing His Canonical Interpretation of Genesis 1–3″on 18 May 2023.
ABOUT THE TALK:
In his well-known speech given in the 1988 Erasmus Lecture titled, “Biblical Interpretation in Crisis”, the then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger acknowledged the contribution that the historical method has offered to the better understanding of the bible; at the same time, he pointed out the inherit limitations that it has and the challenges that it has posed to the Christian faith. Thus, he proposed what is called “Method C” as an edifying method to read the Bible. This view was then further developed, among other places, in the preface to the first instalment of his three-volume work, Jesus of Nazareth. In this lecture, we shall take a closer look at what this “Method C” is according to the late Pope Benedict XVI, and to take as an example his interpretation of Genesis 1–3. In so doing, we may also have a glimpse at his theology of creation, sin, and redemption.
