The “Sea of Plastic: A Recycled Art Exhibition” organised by ISE-USJ, held its opening ceremony yesterday, May 8 at 6:30 PM.
The Sea of Plastic exhibition’s opening ceremony, which took place at the Kent Wong Gallery at 6:30 PM yesterday, was a great success.
Honorable guests including Ms. Leong Lai San, Acting Head of the Division of Tertiary Educational Cooperation and Exchange of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), Ms. Stephanie Zhao, Associate Director of Sustainability Sands China, Ms. Sara Araujo from Sands, Mr. Sit Kai Sin Roy, Director of the Macao Maritime Museum, Ms. Vong Kit Han, Supervisor of Museum Center, Dr. Dragon Lei Kam Peng, representatives from the participating schools, team members from Sands, USJ professors, staff and students, and members of the public attended the event.
In his insightful speech, the Dean of Institute of Science and Environment (ISE), Prof. David Gonçalves, spoke about the challenges that coastal communities face and highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions, the industry, associations, and everyone in addressing the issue of plastic pollution. He emphasized the role of ISE as an institution for developing Science, but its role in education is equally important. Ms. Stephanie Zhao also shared a brief message emphasizing the importance of the industry working together with the university for a common goal and the aim of the Drop by Drop project, which reinvests funds from the sector to projects supporting water and other environmental projects.
After the ceremony, the guests toured the exhibition gallery, which showcased recycled artwork created by students from Lou Hau Middle School, Macao Anglican College, Sacred Heart Canossian College, Sta. Rosa English Secondary, The International School of Macao, Life and Science students from USJ, as well as pieces from Green Future and Ms. Tchusca Songo. The displays received positive feedback, highlighting the importance of events like this in raising awareness of critical environmental issues.
ISE hopes to continue engaging and motivating students to protect our oceans and educate them on the impact of plastic pollution in the sea. By showcasing their work, the exhibition aims to inspire other young people to take positive action to protect the environment in general, not just the oceans.
