The USJ Xavier Research Center for Memory and Identity and USJ Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy is organising a public lecture within the series of events on “Christianity, Modern Culture and Society” on June 26.
ABOUT THE TALK:
The Catholic Church in Western Europe has found itself in a very difficult, if not critical phase. Increasing secularization and ideologization of the cultural sphere have severely strained perceptions of Christian faith and ethics in the public sphere. At the same time, the Church has been seriously weakened by a wave of disclosed cases of sexual abuse, a decline in vocations and an internal sense of the Catholic community’s lack of direction.
It seems legitimate today to have a comprehensive debate about the situation of the Church and its room for maneuver. Is inculturation today legitimate and possible in a society that is questioning the foundations of its own identity? Will Christianity justify its relevance in the face of a scientific world that is indifferent or hostile to it? What answer can the Church give today professing faith in the One who has conquered the world?
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Fr. Andrzej Sarnacki, SJ.
The Rev’d Dr Andrzej Sarnacki, SJ., is a professor at the prestigious Jesuit University Ignatianum in Krakow, Poland. His area of research is cultural, civilisations, violence, Catholic social teaching, management and Jesuit Spirituality. In addition, cultural of violence, Neomarxism, organisational culture and Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola are his special interest.
