USJ co-organised ESG Seminar with Associations of Accountants

The Faculty of Business and Law co-organised an ESG Seminar 2023 with the Macau Association of Chinese Accountants and Macau Association of Women Accountants on June 29, 2023.
On Saturday, 29 July 2023, as part of the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Sustainable Business Series, the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL), together with the Macau Association of Chinese Accountants (MACA) and the Macau Association of Women Accountants (MAWA), organised an ESG Seminar 2023. The seminar was held at the Don Bosco Auditorium of the University of Saint Joseph Ilha Verde Campus to discuss how different entities, including audit firms, corporations, small businesses and a small liberal arts university like USJ, can contribute to environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The seminar invited experts from different fields to share how entities practice ESG in different organisational settings. Mr Adrian Chong, Public Affairs Manager of ACCA, shared the responsibility of accountants and auditors to improve the environmental and social impact of businesses and enhance their governance. Dr Min Yang, Researcher at the United Nations University in Macau, shared the history and development of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prof Jenny Phillips, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) at USJ, shared USJ’s sustainability practices and its FBL’s goal to promote sustainable business, from which they created the Sustainable Business Series to address the SDGs. Prof Phillips also shared the result of USJ’s Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking in 2023, which ranked USJ as the number one university in Macau and number seven in Greater China (Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and Macao SAR) in achieving the SDGs. Ms Ruby O, Chair of the Society of Food and Environmental Health and a renowned expert in corporate sustainability practices, shared how sustainability can be integrated into daily organisational practices from large to small enterprises. Finally, Dr Scarlett Zhang, Vice President of the Supervisory Council of MICSRGC, shared the future of ESG, the prospects and expectations that can lead to benefits for businesses. The seminar was attended by more than 40 professionals, practitioners and students, most of whom work in the field of sustainable development. As a result, the seminar was followed by active discussions among the participants on the development of sustainable practices in Macau.
