Academics from the USJ Faculty of Arts and Humanities a second soundscape workshop at the Media Arts programme at the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok, Thailand.
On 31 August 2023, Dean Prof. Carlos Sena Caires, Prof. Gerald Estadieu, and Prof. Sandra Ng Ka Man from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Saint Joseph (USJ), conducted a second soundscape workshop at the Media Arts programme, School of Architecture and Design at the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok, Thailand. This second Creative Workshop was entitled: “A Creative Approach for Experimental Moving Images”.
The “AI-based Multimodal Qualitative Mapping of Macau Soundscape” research project is funded by the Macau Government’s Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT, Project Code 0026/2020/A1). It aims to create an embedded Artificial Intelligence system to analyse environmental sound and offer an understanding of the city soundscape evolution. Hundreds of hours of recording were done in Macao and being analysed. Many more recordings were also done in Europe and South-East Asia. The project presentation also included several previous projects related to artificial intelligence, generative arts, and virtual environments.
The workshop is a collaboration with Prof. Jung-Chul Hur and Prof. Chakrapipat Assawaboonyalert at KMUTT and their class in Experimental Film Project. Speakers introduced their research work on Soundscape in Macao and their preliminary findings related to environmental sound. The artistic experimentation based on sound and noise followed the discussion. As researchers and artists, they are investigating the relationship between field study and interactive installation art as a creative element to public awareness. The workshop concluded with hands-on practice for students to warm up, let their creativity through smaller exercises, and be triggered by unknown Soundscape. Media Arts (Film and Moving Image major) students created a preliminary storyboard to develop a future experimental short film that would later be exhibited in Macau.
As fruitful as the previous workshop, the team is excited to work on more collaborations and experimental workshops to explore soundscape-based creativity.
