USJ Chancellor and Rector meet Pope Francis

The Chancellor of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Bishop of Macao, the Most Reverend Stephen Lee Bun-sang, and the Rector, the Reverend Professor Stephen Morgan, met with Pope Francis in Rome on 19th January.
The Chancellor of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Bishop of Macao, the Most Reverend Stephen Lee Bun-sang, and the Rector, the Reverend Professor Stephen Morgan, met with Pope Francis in Rome on 19th January.
The event took place at the Centenary Conference of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) – the body that gathers together all Catholic Universities around the world. The Catholic Church is the largest global provider of higher education with over 1,500 universities, colleges, and institutes. Professor Morgan is Vice President of the Federation and, along with Bishop Lee, were among the first at the conference to be presented to Pope Francis.
The theme of the conference was “The University and the Church” and, in his address, Pope Francis pointed out that Catholic Universities were amongst the most important ways in which the Catholic Church serves wider society and contributes to human flourishing. Rector Morgan reminded the Pope that Catholic higher education had started in Asia with the Colégio São Paulo in Macao in 1594 and that with USJ and the newly recognised University of St Francis in Hong Kong, China now had two Catholic universities. The Pope said he wished the universities to flourish and to be a witness to truth, humanity and dialogue in a crucially important part of the world.

Chanceler e Reitor da USJ participam no encontro com o Papa Francisco
O Chanceler da Universidade de São José (USJ), Bispo de Macau, o Reverendíssimo Stephen Lee Bun-sang, e o Reitor, o Reverendo Professor Stephen Morgan, encontraram-se com o Papa Francisco em Roma, no dia 19 de Janeiro.
O encontro foi presidido pela Professora Isabel Capeloa Gil, Reitora da Universidade Católica Portuguesa e Presidente da Federação Internacional das Universidades Católicas (IFCU), na conferência do centenário da IFCU – o orgão que reúne todas as universidades católicas do mundo.
A Igreja Católica é a maior fornecedora global de ensino superior, com mais de 1,500 universidades, faculdades e institutos. O Professor Morgan, Vice-Presidente da IFCU, juntamente com o Bispo Lee, foram um dos primeiros na conferência a serem apresentados ao Papa Francisco.
O tema da conferência foi “A Universidade e a Igreja” e, no seu discurso, o Papa Francisco salientou que as Universidades Católicas estão entre os meios mais importantes pelos quais a Igreja Católica serve à sociedade e contribui para o florescimento humano. O Reitor Morgan recordou ao Papa que o ensino superior católico tinha começado na Ásia com o Colégio São Paulo em Macau em 1594 e que, com a USJ e a recém-reconhecida Universidade de São Francisco em Hong Kong, a China conta agora com duas universidades católicas. O Papa expressou o seu desejo de que as universidades floresçam e que sejam um testemunho da verdade, da humanidade e do diálogo nesta parte tão importante do mundo.
