The University of Saint Joseph proudly hosted the highly anticipated 2024 International Cultural Carnival at its Ilha Verde campus on the 20th of April. The event showcased the vibrant cultural diversity that makes up USJ in a spectacular display of traditional food, music and dance.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao proudly hosted the highly anticipated International Cultural Carnival at its Ilha Verde campus on the 20th of April, 2024. The event brought together around 1,000 participants, including students, faculty, alumni and members of the public, to celebrate the event’s theme of multiculturalism and experience the vibrant atmosphere.
The opening ceremony took place at 12:30 PM, with officiating guests in attendance including Mr. Li Yongle, Level VI Official of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR; Mr. Carlos Roberto Xavier, Head of the Department of Tertiary Education of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEDJ); Mr. Loi Chi Pang, Head of the Department of Public Library Management of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Most Reverend Stephen Lee Bun-sang, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Macao and Chancellor of USJ; and Vice-Rectors of USJ, Prof. Keith Morrison and Dr. Teresa Loong.
The International Cultural Carnival showcased the diverse cultural heritage of more than 50 nationalities represented among the university’s students, faculty and staff members, and alumni. With over 30 booths across the campus offering a variety of international cuisines from China, Portugal, Brazil, Philippines, Vietnam, East Timor, Myanmar, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and France, as well as faculty information stations, art exhibitions, and a marketplace.
In her welcoming speech, Vice-Rector Dr. Teresa Loong, emphasised the university’s commitment to promoting cultural exchange and understanding. She expressed gratitude to the faculty, students, alumni, and participating organizations for their contributions to the success of the carnival. Dr. Loong also highlighted the importance of attracting outstanding international students to USJ and contributing to the development of higher education in Macao.
Chancellor of USJ, Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang, encouraged participants to embrace mutual learning, sharing, and respect as they explored and appreciated different cultures. He emphasised the beauty and uniqueness of each culture and the importance of fostering harmony and integration through face-to-face interactions. Bishop Lee expressed his hope that the carnival would bring joy, inspiration, and a sense of goodwill and support within the community.
The carnival kicked-off with a vibrant parade led by students and staff members proudly carrying flags representing their respective countries, symbolising unity and celebration. Attendees were able to engage and experience a diverse range of cultural traditions and artistic expressions at, including traditional dances and musical performances throughout the event. This immersive experience allowed visitors to truly appreciate and embrace the cultural diversity present at USJ Macao.
In conjunction with the carnival and in honour of World Book Day on April 23rd, the USJ Library transformed into the “Blues Book Café.”, where participants had the opportunity to engage with librarians and learn about the Western technique of Cyanotype Printing as well as the Tie & Dye process. This hands-on experience allowed attendees to use their creativity and craft unique handmade artifacts.
Micah Shayne Bulawan Vibar, a third-year USJ Bachelor of Business Administration student from the Philippines, expressed her excitement in participating in the event. As an international student, she found the experience of showcasing her country’s cultural traditions, such as food and music, both challenging and rewarding.
Miss Lu, a staff member who assisted in organising the event, expressed her pride in the diverse participation of students, faculty, alumni, local businesses, and culturally significant associations, all of whom contributed to the festival’s success.
The University of Saint Joseph extends its sincere appreciation to all the participants, volunteers, and supporters who made the International Cultural Carnival an unforgettable celebration of cultural diversity and exchange.

Carnaval Cultural Internacional da USJ Celebrou o Multiculturalismo no Campus da Ilha Verde
A Universidade de São José (USJ) de Macau teve o orgulho de sediar o Carnaval Cultural Internacional no campus de Ilha Verde no Sábado, dia 20 de Abril de 2024. O evento reuniu cerca de 1,000 participantes, incluindo alunos, docentes, funcionários, antigos alunos e membros do público, a fim de celebrar o tema do evento que é o multiculturalismo, e vivenciar a atmosfera vibrante da USJ.
A cerimónia de abertura ocorreu às 12h30, com a presença de convidados oficiais, incluindo Li Yongle, Oficial Nível VI do Departamento de Educação e Assuntos da Juventude do Escritório de Ligação do Governo Popular Central na ERA de Macau; Carlos Roberto Xavier, Chefe do Departamento de Ensino Superior da Direcção dos Serviços de Educação e de Desenvolvimento da Juventude (DSEDJ); Loi Chi Pang, Chefe do Departamento de Gestão de Bibliotecas Públicas do Instituto Cultural de Macau; Reverendíssimo Stephen Lee Bun-sang, Bispo da Diocese Católica de Macau e Chanceler da USJ; e os vice-reitores da USJ, Prof. Keith Morrison e Dra. Teresa Loong.
O Carnaval Cultural Internacional destacou a diversidade cultural de mais de 50 nacionalidades representadas na comunidade da universidade. Mais de 30 tendas espalhadas pelo campus ofereceram uma variedade de cozinhas internacionais da China, Portugal, Brasil, Filipinas, Vietname, Timor-Leste, Myanmar, São Tomé e Príncipe, Moçambique, Guiné-Bissau e França, bem como estações de informação de cada faculdade, exposições de arte, e um “marketplace”.
Em seu discurso de boas-vindas, a Vice-reitora Dra. Teresa Loong enfatizou o compromisso da universidade em promover o intercâmbio cultural e entendimento. Ela expressou gratidão aos funcionários, alunos, ex-alunos e organizações participantes pelas suas contribuições para o sucesso do evento. A Vice-reitora destacou também a importância de atrair estudantes internacionais com qualidade para a USJ e contribuir para o desenvolvimento do ensino superior em Macau.
O Chanceler da USJ, Bispo Stephen Lee Bun-sang, incentivou os participantes a adoptarem uma atitude de aprendizagem recíproca, de partilha e de respeito, ao explorarem e apreciarem diferentes culturas. Ele enfatizou a beleza e a singularidade de cada cultura e a importância de promover a harmonia e a integração por meio de interações presenciais. O Bispo Lee expressou a sua esperança de que o carnaval trouxesse alegria, inspiração, e um sentimento de boa vontade e apoio à comunidade.
O carnaval iniciou-se com um desfile vibrante de bandeiras, liderado por alunos e funcionários representando os seus respectivos países, simbolizando a unidade e a celebração. Os visitantes tiveram a oportunidade de experienciar uma gama diversificada de tradições culturais e expressões artísticas, incluindo danças tradicionais e actuações musicais ao longo do evento. Esta experiência imersiva permitiu aos visitantes apreciar e abraçar verdadeiramente a diversidade cultural presente na USJ.
Em conjunto com o carnaval e em homenagem ao Dia Mundial do Livro celebrado no dia 23 de Abril, a Biblioteca da USJ transformou-se no “Blues Book Café”, oferecendo workshops sobre a técnica ocidental de impressão cianotípica, bem como o processo “Tie & Dye”. Esta experiência prática permitiu que os participantes usassem a sua criatividade e criassem artefactos únicos feitos à mão.
Micah Shayne Bulawan Vibar, uma estudante do terceiro ano da Licenciatura em Gestão de Empresas da USJ, oriunda das Filipinas, expressou o seu entusiasmo em participar no evento. Como estudante internacional, achou a experiência de mostrar as tradições culturais do seu país, como a comida e a música, simultaneamente desafiante e gratificante.
Sra. Lu, uma funcionária que ajudou na organização do evento, expressou o seu orgulho na participação diversificada de alunos, docentes, ex-alunos, empresas locais e associações culturalmente significativas, todos os quais contribuíram para o sucesso do festival.
