During the 3rd AUAP Faculty Development Programme Macao, Vice-rector Prof. Álvaro Barbosa delivered a keynote speech highlighting USJ’s efforts in international student recruitment, joint degree programs, and the establishment of partnerships.
A delegation from the University of Saint Joseph Macao (USJ Macao) comprised of the Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Academic Affairs, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa and team members of the International Affairs Office (IAO), Ms Jenny Hong and Ms Teresinha Fok, recently took part in the 3rd AUAP Faculty Development Programme which was held in Bangkok, Thailand from April 21 to 24, April 2024.
The 3rd AUAP Faculty Development Program, themed “Internationalisation of Higher Education”, provides Higher Education Institution’s staff with insights and skills required to become effective managers and relevant agents in the internationalisation process of their Higher Education Institutions. This year’s edition was organised by the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) in collaboration with the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU).
The opening ceremony featured a speech by Prof. Dr. Anoop Swarup, Secretary General of AUAP, who welcomed the participants to the event. One of the keynote speeches of the programme “Instruments and Models for Practical Engagement in Internationalisation” was delivered by Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, also known as a member of the AUAP Quality Assurance Committee (QAC).
During the talk, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa discussed the tendency of internationalisation in higher education in various aspects. He highlighted USJ’s efforts in international student recruitment, the role of the international affairs office, the development of joint and dual degree programs plays a crucial role in the process of internationalisation and the establishment of partnerships and cotutelle agreements. He also emphasised the increasing importance of internationalisation and the growth in the number of institutional international partnerships over the past five years.
USJ Macao has joined AUAP as a member since 2010. Throwback to last year, the Rector of USJ Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan was an elected member of the Executive Board of AUAP for the period of 2023 – 2024. USJ Macao was also thrilled with the opportunity of hosting the edition of 2023 of the Faculty Development Program (FDP) at Ilha Verde Campus, Macao.
The Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP), was established on the 28th of July 1995, with the highest consultative status and recognition with UNESCO. AUAP’s primary purpose is to be the main platform for interaction and collaboration between members and to be an effective voice for universities in Asia and the Pacific region. The Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU) was established on the 25th of August 1996. ASEACCU’s purpose is to promote Catholic Higher Education and to be a support for the local Churches. The association also aims to contribute to educational dialogue on an international level beyond the Southeast and East Asian regions. ASEACCU is the Asian Branch of the International Federation of Catholic University (IFCU).
Furthermore, as a result of both associations’ dedication to fostering educational dialogue on an international and regional level, ASEACCU signed a partnership agreement with AUAP last year, and this year ASEACCU is one of the key partners in hosting the 3rd Faculty Development Program in Bangkok. Thailand.
