A delegation of New York Institute of Finance (NYIF) led by Mr. Li Tian, CEO of the Institute, visited University of Saint Joseph (USJ) to explore the possibility of partnership for the development of the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Greater Bay Area market on April 25th, 2024. The delegation also included Dr. Sudeep Rathee, Managing Director of Strategic Development and International Programs, Mr. Yang Song, Executive Vice President for Partnerships of New York Institute of Finance China and International Finance Corporation (IFC) Consultant, Dr. Ding Yu.

The delegation from New York was received by professor Jenny Phillips, Dean of the USJ Faculty of Business and Law, Professor Sérgio Gomes, Coordinator of MBA Programme, and Professor Emil Marques, Coordinator for Executive Training and Project Development in the Faculty of Business and Law.

The meeting commenced with a presentation by USJ Executive Training and Project Development specialist, Emil Marques on the important role of the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) with focus on the innovation happening in Hengqin and Macao as an extension of the platform to serve the Portuguese- Speaking Countries based on the “1 + 4” strategic industries set out by the Macao government. In addition, a discussion on how the degree programs within the faculty and various organisations and projects currently operating under the direction of the faculty could potentially complement the strategic expansion of NYIF in the GBA area. In addition, the latest partnership with SANY (Zhuhai) Investment Co. Ltd, which saw the establishment of the Sino-Lusophone Business Development Centre in Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin could serve as a bridge for entry into the GBA.

This was followed by presentation of NYIF strategic directions by the CEO, Mr. Lee Tian with the extensive resources and expertise from Wall Street over the last century. The meeting ended on a very positive note for future development and cooperation.

After the meeting, the delegation was given a tour of the Sino-Lusophone Business Development Centre in Hengqin and an overall explanation of the cooperation zone in the SANY Southern Headquarters Building.

University of Saint Joseph Faculty of Business and Law strives to serve the diversification strategies of Macau. By providing a platform to serve Macau and the integration of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, the establishment of the Sino-Lusophone Business Development Centre will serve as a capacity building and innovation transfer hub from the world to Hengqin. This will continue the tradition of USJ to function as the knowledge exchange centre and talent development hub between East and West.
