USJ's Department of Social Work Co-organises "World Social Work Day Seminar" with Professional Council of Macao Social Workers and Women's General Association of Macau

The meeting was hosted by Mr Poon Chi-ming, Executive Director of Caritas and Chairman of the Social Workers Professional Committee, who encouraged the social workers to strive for self-improvement, not forgetting the original intention of being a social worker, and to create vitality together with the service users in the changing social service environment.



In response to the World Social Work Day celebrated on March 19, 2024 , the Department of Social Work of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Saint Joseph (FHS-USJ), in collaboration with the Macao Social Workers’ Professional Committee and the Women’s General Association of Macau, organised a series of activities for the World Social Worker’s Day, under this year’s theme “Buen Vivir (Good Living): A Common Future for Transformation”, which included a seminar on the topic of “Enjoying the Good” – a seminar for social workers.

The seminar was supported and participated by many local social workers. The seminar kicked-off with a seminar led by Prof. Jayson Lou, Programme Coordinator for the Master of Social Work of FHS-USJ and member of the Professional Committee of Social Workers. The seminar was related to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), followed by a review of the development and changes of the Macao social work landscape over the years by present social workers in the light of the international standards and the shaping of a common future, which not only activated the thinking of the social workers, but also brought out different introspection.

Participating social workers have identified a number of common challenges faced by the society, including how social workers can adapt to the MSAR Government’s “1+4” policy, how to launch a study on service needs indicators for different social service recipients, support for the working-poor families, review of career-oriented support for young people, as well as a review of the effectiveness of the Law on Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence, etc.

The meeting was hosted by Mr Poon Chi-ming, Executive Director of Caritas and Chairman of the Social Workers Professional Committee, who encouraged the social workers to strive for self-improvement, not forgetting the original intention of being a social worker, and to create vitality together with the service users in the changing social service environment. Participants were impressed by the novelty of the symposium and hoped that future symposiums could continue to be organised with different themes.
