The university is honoured to be invited to the student workshop “Meet The Artist | Joana Vasconcelos Workshop” last March 16, 2015 at Grande Praça MGM Macau. A group of professors and selected students from the Faculty of Creative Industries had the chance to meet the well-known Portuguese artist, who has been invited by MGM to design and install artworks at their main lobby.
Joana Vasconcelos is one of the preeminent artists of the younger generations. Her new installation created for MGM is comprised of solely new works and is the artist’s first solo exhibition in China. Vasconcelos has created the most ambitious piece to date of her iconic Valkyries series, which draws on the marine and maritime, and connects with the Portuguese heritage of Macau, embracing the vitality of Portuguese art and culture from a new perspective.
Below is a testimonial from Andrea Medina, our Year 4 Communication and Media student.

“Renowed Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos has yet created another piece to add  to the “Valkyrie” series at Grande Praça, a giant octopus that branches from the marine aquarium and connects organically with the three large-scale floor main lobby of MGM Macau. The chance was given to a group of the Faculty of Creative Industries USJ students to attend a workshop with Joana and get some insights on the background story on the octopus’ origin and introduction to her previous works. Inspiring, daring, feminine and true are just a few words to describe Joana’s works and the personality behind each art piece. The simple fact of admiring the octopus and its many perspectives can summarize the highlight of a day.Furthermore, the  artist presented us with the Jóia do Tejo, the Carmen Miranda, the Coração independente vermelho among some of her most recognized works praising the female figure and her values towards society. However, the golden advice to young prospective students and artists has more weight than the actual octopus, that is: “Never give up, if you really want something you will be able to accomplish it”.An artist not born but made reaching out to all of us, just like the octopus.”
