USJ’s project ‘Mangrove Magic: A Nature-Based Solution for a Sustainable City’ has been shortlisted for the 2024 International Green Gown Awards “Nature Positive” category. This recognition highlights the university’s ongoing dedication and commitment to sustainability and its efforts to foster an environmentally conscious community within the institution, Macao and the wider community.
In a remarkable achievement, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao has been selected as a finalist for the International Green Gown Awards 2024. This prestigious recognition highlights the university’s ongoing dedication and commitment to sustainability, and its efforts to foster an environmentally conscious community within the institution, Macao, and the wider community.
The International Green Gown Awards, in partnership with Allianz Global Investors, and supported by UN Environment Programme, recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges around the globe.
USJ’s shortlisted project titled “Mangrove Magic: A Nature-Based Solution for a Sustainable City“, coordinated by Prof. Karen Tagulao of the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of USJ, showcases the university’s commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable urban development through the use of mangroves.
The project, submitted under the “Nature Positive” category, which is in recognition of the Global Goal for Nature, focuses on harnessing the benefits of mangroves as a nature-based solution (NbS) to enhance urban sustainability. Mangroves are known for mitigating coastal erosion, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity. USJ aims to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable city environment by integrating scientific research into environmental education and outreach, as exemplified in the mangroves project.
The International Green Gown Awards cover various categories, from climate action, societal impacts, nature positive, student engagement, to sustainable institutions. Being selected as a finalist places USJ among the leading institutions globally that are making significant strides in sustainability.
As the University of Saint Joseph Macao prepares for the final round of the International Green Gown Awards, it stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of education in driving positive change. The winners of the 2024 International Green Gown Awards will be announced later this year, and the USJ community is confident that their hard work and dedication will be rewarded with this prestigious accolade.
