The Chinese Literacy Education and Research Project (referred to as the CLEAR Project) was planned in 2016 and has been housed in the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao since July 2020.
The Chinese Literacy Education and Research Project (referred to as the CLEAR Project) was planned in 2016 and has been housed in the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao since July 2020. The long-term goal of the project is to establish a language teaching model with research and empirical basis in Macao, provide professional guidance for teachers, set up intervention programs for students, and organize education seminars for parents, with the aim to promote the development of children’s early literacy.
After 7 years of implementation, the CLEAR Project has benefited a large number of teachers, students and parents. The effectiveness of the intervention program has been widely recognized for promoting teaching and learning, raising the awareness of parents and communities on the importance of early literacy development. The project has also published a series of preschool language learning materials, including the “Learn to Read” Basal Reader Series, nursery rhymes, and learning cards, to optimize the quality of preschool language teaching.
On July 3, 2024, Professor Miranda Chi Kuan Mak, the project director, and Professor Cheng Pui-wan, the project’s honorary advisor, together with the project team members, visited the kindergarten division of three partner schools, namely Macau Baptist College, Colegio de Santa Rosa de Lima (Chinese Section) and Lou Hau High School Affiliated Kindergarten (in no particular order). The project team was pleased to hear the schools sharing their successful experiences in implementing the project, expressing their willingness to continue to develop the CLEAR Project in a school-based manner, and providing support programs and other services for students.
In the future, the CLEAR Project will continue to develop, offering literacy education consultation services and teacher training courses for local kindergartens.
