Rector of Pontificia Università della Santa Croce visits USJ

Rev. Prof. Luis Navarro, Rector of Pontificia Università della Santa Croce in Rome, toured the USJ Ilha Verde and Seminary Campuses during his visit on the 29 July.



USJ Vice-rector for Internationalisation and Academic Affairs Prof. Álvaro Barbosa and Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy Fr. Cyril Jerome Law, Jr. warmly greeted Rev. Prof. Luis Navarro, Rector of Pontificia Università della Santa Croce in Rome, accompanied by Rev. Joseph Buzzo from the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong during his visit to the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) on the 29th of July, 2024.

The purposeful meeting provided both institutions an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and anticipate future encounters and partnerships. In particular, Prof. Álvaro gave an overview of USJ’s mission and pillars as a Catholic higher education institution rooted in Macao, roles and responsibilities within the ASEACCU and IFCU, and the unique curriculum and attributes of USJ for international students. Fr. Cyril further elaborated on the University’s educational mission through the disciplines of Philosophy and Theology, as well as a newly established Masters programme as an exciting step towards fostering local engagement, contribution and reinforcing a strong ecclesial community. 

Whilst reflecting on recent education trends, Rev. Prof. Luis Navarro echoed the importance of in-person connections despite the pandemic and virtual learning mediums that followed, and looks forward to exploring faculty and research exchange opportunities between USJ and Santa Croce in the related fields of Liturgics, Canon Law and Communication studies. 

Concluding the visit, Prof. Carlos Caires, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, introduced the various USJ campus studios and facilities and the Graduation Exhibition showcasing USJ design and architectural studies student works. 

Rev. Prof. Luis Navarro will also be giving an open talk on “Evangelization, Laity and Charisms” on 30 July in the Holy Cross Chapel at USJ. 

Pontificia Università della Santa Croce, or Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, is a Roman Catholic University with the aim of offering the universal Church as an effective instrument for formation and research. Comprising the schools of Theology, Canon Law, Philosophy, and Church Communications, the University offers interdisciplinary courses and are open to scholars and intellectuals from the economic, scientific, philosophical, and political fields.
