Dr. Chan dedicated seventy years to Catholic education in Macao, serving in various significant roles at Colégio Diocesano de São José (CDSJ), and was awarded the Doctor of Education (Honoris Causa) by the University of Saint Joseph in 2022.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Honorary Dr. Chan Kei I, former Chancellor of Colégio Diocesano de São José, who departed this life peacefully at Kiang Wu Hospital on the 28th of August, 2024, at 1:58 AM.
Dr. Chan dedicated seventy years to Catholic education in Macao, serving in various significant roles at Colégio Diocesano de São José (CDSJ). His commitment began as a primary school teacher, later ascending to positions such as Director of the General Office and Director of the Administration Centre at CDSJ. In 1979, he was appointed to the supervisory committee of CDSJ by Bishop Arquimínio Rodrigues da Costa, marking the start of a remarkable journey in educational leadership.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Chan received numerous accolades for his contributions, including the Macao Medal of Professional Merit in Education awarded by then-Governor H.E. General Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira in 1993, and the Medal of Merit in Education from the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region in 2004. His leadership extended beyond CDSJ, representing the Macao Catholic School Association and actively participating in committees aimed at enhancing education in the region.
Dr. Chan was a scholar in his own right, earning degrees in Education from renowned institutions and publishing influential works such as “Calculation Guide for Physics in Secondary Education” and “The Administration of Primary and Secondary Schools in Macao.” His legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to educational excellence and the promotion of Catholic values.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Chan Kei I was awarded the Doctor of Education (Honoris Causa) by the University of Saint Joseph in 2022, a testament to his profound impact on the educational landscape in Macao.
Dr. Chan Kei I leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and a commitment to education that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for students and educators alike has left an indelible mark on the community.
He is survived by his family, friends, and countless students whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life and contributions to education.
