From September 16 to 20, 2024, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Academic Affairs at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ Macao), visited the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) to deliver a series of impactful training workshops aimed to cultivate a more robust partnership between USJ Macao and UEH.

The visit was undertaken with the purpose of exchanging ideas with the College of Technology and Design at UEH through the promotion of creativity and liberal arts principles. This initiative involved focused sessions for both faculty and students, facilitating a significant cultural exchange.

Training Workshop for Lecturers: “Systematic Creativity” – Reclaiming imagination in the classroom

During the workshop for lecturers, Prof. Barbosa emphasized the critical role of systematic creativity in academia. He highlighted that creativity is not merely an inherent talent but a skill that can be cultivated through structured methodologies. “Rather than relying on fleeting inspiration, Systematic Creativity provides a scientific and organized pathway for innovation,” he explained, encouraging educators to adopt this approach in their teaching practices. Training Workshop for Students: “Is Design Thinking the Answer to Everything?”

In a vibrant session for students, titled “Is Design Thinking the Answer to Everything?”, Prof. Barbosa urged participants to “think outside the box.” He described Design Thinking as a versatile mindset that can be applied across various fields, stressing that it is not a rigid formula but an iterative process requiring ongoing experimentation and learning.

Throughout the workshop, attendees engaged in practical exercises, including the popular Spaghetti Tower challenge, which allowed them to apply design thinking principles in a hands-on manner. Prof. Barbosa provided numerous real-world examples, making the workshop both engaging and informative.  Source: CTD Fanpage

The workshops received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, who expressed enthusiasm for the new ideas and skills acquired during the sessions. Prof. Barbosa’s visit not only infused the lecturers and students at UEH with fresh perspectives on creativity and design thinking but also embodied the spirit of cultural exchange that strengthens the partnership between USJ Macao and UEH.

As both institutions continue to collaborate, the exchange of knowledge and ideas promises to foster a new generation of innovative thinkers and creators.
