The 1st Lusophone Arbitration Congress Macau 2024, themed “Harmonization in Sino-Lusophone Arbitration: Bridging Legal Cultures and Expanding Opportunities,” will be held from October 10 – 12, 2024, at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao.
The Lusophone Arbitration Congress will be a prestigious gathering set to explore and advance the landscape of arbitration within the Portuguese-speaking world.
The congress kicks off on October 11th with an invigorating agenda for an insightful exploration of arbitration in Lusophone jurisdictions. The opening day will feature keynote addresses, including a programmatic speech on the global state of arbitration in Lusofonia by Professor Rui Medeiros and Dr. Filipa Cansado de Carvalho. Dr. Fan Yang will deliver a keynote address on the global state of arbitration in China, adding a valuable perspective from Mainland China to the discourse.
The first day’s sessions, will delve into arbitration practices in specific Lusophone jurisdictions. Attendees will gain profound insights into the nuances of arbitration in Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor and a session on Lusophone Arbitral Awards, their requirements and effects..
On October 12th, will host a series of focused sessions throughout the day. The agenda includes sessions on Macau’s pivotal role in Sino-Lusophone arbitration, and an exploration of arbitration in the Grande Baia region. The day will conclude with a session highlighting the crucial role of young referees in promoting Portuguese-speaking arbitration, underlining the commitment to nurturing the next generation of arbitration professionals. Join us for two days of rich discussions, networking opportunities, and valuable insights at the forefront of Lusophone arbitration.
Congress Objectives:
In the Action Plan of the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (2017-2019) it was agreed “4.4 The Ministers reiterated their support for taking advantage of Macau’s comparative advantages in terms of knowledge of the legal systems of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, including its promotion as one of the arbitration venues for resolving possible conflicts arising from trade between businesspeople of Forum Macau Participating Countries“.
The primary objectives of the 1st Lusophone Arbitration Congress Macau 2024 are:
- To facilitate discussions and share knowledge on harmonizing arbitration practices between China and Lusophone countries.
- To explore opportunities for expanding commercial and investment ties between China and Lusophone markets through effective dispute resolution mechanisms.
- To build a network of top Lusophone and Chinese arbitrators, enabling them to connect, interact, and gain insights into each other’s legal cultures and practices.
