The Institute of Science and Environment will hold a ISE Science Seminar – Environmental research: from Hong Kong to polar regions, from harmful algal blooms to beneficial microalgae industry on 08th February 2023.
ABOUT THE TALK:
In addition to environmental pollution and shortage of water resources, climate change which has resulted with significant loss of the total area of Permafrost and decrease in biodiversity is no doubt the greatest challenge of sustainability in contemporary world. Prof. K. C. Ho, a scientist in water quality and polar researcher of Hong Kong spent most of his retirement fund in establishing the Bauhinia Research Station in Svalbard Isles, the Higher Arctic so that his ideal in green movement and education can be achieved. According to his research results over the past 40 years, harmful algal bloom (HAB, commonly known as red tide) occurs more frequent than before, indicating the threat of pollution and global warming nowadays. If we do not step-up actions in environmental management, the consequences would be tragic. Human beings are at the critical moment – either take care of the mother Earth by sustainable business and policies, and community actions, or we would face the striking back of the nature.
Achieving carbon-zero, circular economy and ESG is fundamental. Think globally, act locally, we should promote environmental protection without delay!
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Founding Chair and Director, Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong
Prof. Ho has a wide spectrum of academic interests, including harmful algal blooms (red tide and blue green algae), water quality and water environment management, environmental policies (cross-border environmental cooperation, EIA, environmental legislation and sustainable development), environmental ethics (environmental philosophy and ecological theology), environmental education (green schools, NGO and community environmental actions) and polar research. Prof. Ho has published about 40 books and more than 500 academic papers in journals and proceedings, >10 technical reports for the Government and 8 sets of distance-learning study materials. With regard to polar research, Prof. Ho visited the Antarctica four times and the Higher Arctic ten times. He holds a prestigious position in his academic research areas and has obtained numerous honours and awards at local, regional and international levels.
