Materiality, beyond the norm

The USJ Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) announces its 2024-2025 Lecture Series: Materiality, Beyond the Norm. This series invites students, architects, designers, and the broader community to engage in open dialogue with leading practitioners who are redefining the boundaries of architecture and design. As the world grapples with significant challenges, this lecture series will explore how innovative approaches to materiality can reshape our built environment. By focusing on the intersection of form, function, and substance, the lectures will inspire critical thinking and encourage unconventional design solutions.

DAD is committed to fostering a culture of experimentation and innovation. At USJ, we aim to showcase the work of visionary studios and stimulate conversations that push the boundaries of traditional architectural and design practices. Join us for a series of thought-provoking lectures that will ignite your creativity.


About the Talk:

This lecture takes a deep dive into the journey of industrial design, from initial research to market launch. Spanning several years of challenges and covering a diverse portfolio of projects with clients and requirements across the globe. It emphasizes the critical role of materials, manufacturing processes, and strategic decisions in transforming ideas into market-ready products. The session offers insights into how creativity and problem-solving converge to navigate the complexities of design and deliver impactful solutions.

About the Speaker:

Laura Mimini

Professional industrial designer since 2011, Laura has collaborated with leading Italian and international companies across industries like Electrical Appliances, Automotive, Baby Care, Wearables, and more.
In 2017, her passion for travel and new cultures led her to leave Italy, working first in Australia and later settling in China. Believing in design’s power to make the world a better place, she blends creativity and functionality in her work, often integrating music and design in her side projects.
An award-winning designer, her accolades include an IF Design Award for the project “Meum” electric bass guitar. In 2023, she was named a Design Ambassador for Australia’s Good Design Award.
Over the last six years, Laura has actively participated in design conferences and contributed to workshops and university teaching, sharing her expertise and passion with the next generation of designers.
Today, Laura is Managing Partner and Design Director of D2P – Design to Product, an international Italian-Chinese design company.
