Public Lecture | Challenges and Opportunities of Sponge City Construction in Macao

26

Sep

The Public Lecture “Challenges and Opportunities of Sponge City Construction in Macao”, organised by the USJ Institute of Science and Environment, will take place on September 26 at Speaker’s Hall in NAPE Campus.

About the Talk:

Flooding, sewage surcharge, and inadequate sanitation are rampant issues in many countries in the world. These challenges are exacerbated by the intensifying effects of climate change, leading to more frequent and intense short-duration storms. The consequences are devastating, with lives lost and livelihoods shattered.

Despite numerous proposed solutions, implementation and tangible results remain scarce. This lecture presents an innovative approach to address urban flooding, improve sanitation, and separate sewer from storm runoff. Our solution utilizes Low Impact Development (LID) principles to restore the flow regime to pre-development conditions, effectively preventing floods up to a 30-year storm event.

About the Speaker:

Dr. She Nian is a globally recognized leader in sustainable water management with over 30 years of experience. He earned his Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Washington in 1995 and has since made significant contributions to urban stormwater management and low-impact development (LID). As the Director of the Tsinghua University Innovation Center in Zhuhai and Chief Technical Officer at Herrera Environmental Consultant Inc., Dr. She has led numerous award-winning projects, including the Kunshan Huaqiao Business City Waterfront Filtration System, Ningbo Eastern Ecological New City, and the Zhenjiang City Old Community Sponge Project in China, which have received accolades such as the American Society of Landscape Architects Design Award and the NOVATECH Award.
