Oct
The Public Lecture “Introducing Corpus Linguistics to future educators” will take place on the 30th October in Classroom 102 of the USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
About the Talk:
Corpus linguistics, the study of language through large collections of real-world texts (corpora), provides powerful insights into language patterns, usage, and evolution. This lecture provides an overview of corpus linguistics and its practical applications in language teaching. By analyzing authentic language data, educators can gain a deeper understanding of language structure, vocabulary, grammar, and discourse, moving beyond prescriptive rules to a more data-driven, descriptive approach to language teaching and learning.
This session explores the basics of corpus linguistics by looking into real-life examples and trends in language use. Additionally, the lecture will address the benefits of using corpora to develop learner-centered activities, promote critical thinking, and encourage language discovery. It is hoped that participants will gain insights on how to utilize corpus data for enhancing students’ language learning experiences in the classroom.
