The Public Lecture “Macao’s images of change and contrasts: An ethnographic visual approach” will take place on Thursday, 9 November in the Media Room USJ 604.
ABOUT THE TALK:
This talk will focus on the “Macau in Contrasts (2010-2018)” photography exhibition. The itinerant exhibition is a collection of ethnographic photographs collected by the researcher throughout her various fieldworks in Macao, from 2010 to 2018. This photography exhibition aimed to capture in images a Macao in transformation, embedded in a transitional sociopolitical context with a thriving tourism economy based in different dimensions, from gambling to food and cultural heritage.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
MARISA C. GASPAR, PhD
Postdoctoral Research Fellow at SOCIUS/CSG – Research in Social Sciences and Management, ISEG-UL
Invited Assistant Professor at ISEG, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal
Marisa C. Gaspar is an anthropologist conducting ethnographic fieldwork on Macao’s identity construction and sociocultural change since 2010 to present. In order to register, contextualize and analyze the city’s economic, social and human environments in ongoing transformations, the researcher has been using photography as visual method and data collection. By portraying the researcher’s long-term ethnographic fieldwork, the use of visual ethnography helps in the dissemination of knowledge and in developing outreach activities for wider, and not exclusively specialized, audiences.
