Year of Prayer Lecture Series | “Prayer in the Benedictine Tradition”

15

Dec

The Rev’d Professor Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ, will present the Year of Prayer Lecture Series “Prayer in the Benedictine Tradition” on Sunday, 15 December, 2024, at the St. Lawrence’s Parish Church.

About the Talk:

This lecture will explore the context, significance and structure of prayer within Benedictine spirituality, rooted in the teachings of St. Benedict of Nursia. It will examine the prayer understood as “the Work of God” (the Opus Dei) and its role in shaping the daily rhythm of Benedictine life through the communal recitation of the Divine Office, as well as the practice of Lectio Divina—a contemplative method of scripture reading. Key themes include the integration of prayer with work, the value of silence, and the transformative power of community life. The lecture will consider how these ancient practices remain relevant today, offering structure, inner peace, and a sense of sacred purpose for both monastics and laypeople by prioritising a silence of heart before the mystery of God revealed in His Word and encountered in the Liturgy.
