About the Talk

Cities have become more impermeable and with an increasing habitat fragmentation and ecosystem degradation. Nature has been called back to the city not as an ornament but for its valuable services. Green Infrastructures act as a structuring element of the urban landscape by allowing connectivity between territories and helping to maintain the services provided by ecosystems, bringing several environmental, economic and social benefits. In addition, it promotes adaptation to the effects of climate change and contributes to the transition to a low carbon economy. Nature-based solutions (NBS) are inspired and supported by nature and use, or mimic, natural processes to contribute to the improved management of water. They can promote enhancement of water availability, improvement of water quality and reduction of water-related risks.

This talk will discuss the integration of Nature Based Solution (NBS) in cities towards managing water resources, offset the rising challenges from water security to population growth and climate change.

It will be delivered within the context of the project “Nature-based solutions for a cleaner and safer Macao” implemented by Institute of Science and Environment at USJ and supported by Clean the World Foundation and Las Vegas Sands.

About the Speaker

Cristina Calheiros is Environmental Engineer and holds a PhD in Biotechnology. Currently works as Researcher at CIIMAR – Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto. Closely collaborates with Institute of Science and Environment-University of Saint Joseph-Macau SAR/China. She is Board Member at Ordem dos Engenheiros and at The Portuguese National Association of Green Roof (ANCV). She is also a Climate Reality Leader. Recently has integrated the international network of COST Action – Implementing nature-based solutions for creating a resourceful circular city.

Her work focuses on water management and treatment solutions, phytoremediation, climate change adaptation and mitigation through nature-based solutions (green roofs, constructed and floating wetlands) and education for sustainability.
