About the Event
Food has an enormous social and environmental impact. According to UN agencies, the environmental impact of agriculture accounts for about 33% of the overall global impact of all human activities, some researcher put the figure even at 50%. In addition, about 1/3 of all food is wasted globally. Food-waste, taken as “country” accounts for the 3rd largest CO2 emitter after the US and China. But many people do not have enough food to eat. “Whenever food is thrown out it is as if it were stolen from the table of the poor”, claims correctly Pope Francis in his Encyclical Letter Laudatu Si’ (LS 36).
This project studies the situation of food-waste and its prevention in Macau from an ethical and theological viewpoint. Based on facts, findings, and evaluation, recommendations are formulated for individuals, communities, and policy makers. A special focus will be also on the cultural (and spiritual) factors hindering or fostering food-waste prevention in Macau and China.
