Clean the World, announces three world-changing Drop by Drop projects that are changing how we think about water globally, including Institute of Science and Environment’s (USJ/ISE) most recent Drop by Drop project, “Wetland Ecosystems: A Nature-Based Solution for Coastal Protection and Plastic Pollution Entrapment in Macao.”
In celebration of World Water Day, 2023, Clean the World, announces three world-changing Drop by Drop projects that are changing how we think about water globally. Among these is the USJ Institute of Science and Environment’s (ISE) most recent Drop by Drop project, “Wetland Ecosystems: A Nature-Based Solution for Coastal Protection and Plastic Pollution Entrapment in Macao.”
The project, developed by Prof. Karen Tagulao of ISE, focuses on wetland ecosystems, such as mangroves, as a nature-based solution for coastal defense and plastic pollution entrapment in Macao. It aims to assess plastic pollution along the city’s coastal environment and investigate the specific roles of the local wetland ecosystems for the entrapment and remediation of plastic pollution and reduction of water-related risks (flooding due to the impact of storm surge brought by more frequent severe weather events). The scientific aspect of the project is being complemented by community-based activities to raise awareness about plastic pollution, its impact on aquatic ecosystems, and mitigation strategies. These awareness campaigns are expected to translate into action with community participation and active engagement in coastal clean-ups, planting and other relevant activities.
Funded by Clean the World foundation and Las Vegas Sands, this project is developed within the framework of the Drop by Drop Project that reinvests capital from water stewardship efforts into innovative projects. With climate change and plastic pollution posing increasing threats to our planet, the need for innovative and effective solutions has never been so critical. ISE’s project represents a significant step in addressing these pressing environmental issues. It is also an example of how industries and academic institutions can work together to create a more sustainable future for Macao and the world.
