The Guimarães Rosa Lecturership at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at USJ celebrated the diversity of the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa (PALOP) through the Cultural Connections Project.
The Guimarães Rosa Lecturership at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) celebrated the diversity of the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa (PALOP) through the Cultural Connections Project, an initiative organised by Lecturer Camila Oliveira Macêdo in the Language and Culture of the Lusophone Countries I classes. Between January and April 2025, USJ students of various nationalities presented the cultural richness of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, strengthening intercultural dialogue and promoting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Education, diversity, and inclusion are the core purposes of the project.
The Cultural Connections Project goes beyond language learning: it is a tool to combat stereotypes and celebrate diversity in the academic context. By enabling students to take the lead in sharing their cultures, FAH reinforces its commitment to interdisciplinary education, inclusive and diverse learning, and fostering cooperation among different voices—principles aligned with the UN SDGs.
The sessions transformed the classroom into a space of discovery, where students shared traditions, languages, music, cuisine, and stories from their countries:
- Angola (16 January): Student Alidoro Chenda captivated the class with contemporary dances, music, and Angolan customs, highlighting the country’s wedding celebrations.
- Cape Verde (20 February): Guest Janissa Ramos, a native of Santiago Island, guided participants on a virtual tour of the landscapes, history, and traditions of the Cape Verdean archipelago.
- Guinea-Bissau (27 February): José Menjur showcased his country’s ethnic diversity and natural beauty, emphasizing the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity.
- Mozambique (17 March): The class became a culinary experience with student Natércia Jonas’ cooking workshop, where she taught how to prepare Frango de Coco (Coconut Chicken) while discussing local vocabulary and curiosities.
- São Tomé and Príncipe (03 April): Kwame Alegre took the class on a journey to discover the paradisiacal beaches, Creole culture, and unique history of the smallest Portuguese-speaking country.
The Cultural Connections Project reinforces USJ’s role as a promoter of intercultural and inclusive education, aligned with global challenges. By bringing together students from different backgrounds, the initiative not only enriches academic knowledge but also strengthens the university as a space for dialogue between cultures. The expectation is that future cycles of the project will further expand this exchange of knowledge.

Projeto Conexões Culturais: Países de Língua Portuguesa – Uma Jornada entre Culturas
O Leitorado Guimarães Rosa da Faculdade de Artes e Humanidades (FAH) da Universidade de São José (USJ) celebrou a diversidade dos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP) por meio do Projeto Conexões Culturais, iniciativa organizada pela Leitora Camila Oliveira Macêdo nas aulas de Língua e Cultura dos Países de Língua Portuguesa I. Entre janeiro e abril de 2025, estudantes da USJ de diferentes nacionalidades apresentaram as riquezas de Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique e São Tomé e Príncipe, fortalecendo o diálogo intercultural e promovendo os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) da ONU, em especial o ODS 4 (Educação de Qualidade) e o ODS 10 (Redução das Desigualdades). A educação, diversidade e inclusão são os propósitos do projeto.
O Projeto Conexões Culturais vai além do aprendizado linguístico: é uma ferramenta de combate a estereótipos e de valorização da diversidade no contexto académico. Ao proporcionar que estudantes sejam protagonistas na divulgação de suas culturas, a FAH reforça seu compromisso com uma formação interdisciplinar, educação inclusiva e diversa, além de fomentar a cooperação entre diversas vozes — princípios alinhados aos ODS da ONU.
Os encontros transformaram a sala de aula em um espaço de descoberta, onde estudantes compartilharam tradições, línguas, música, gastronomia e histórias de seus países:
- Angola (16/01): O estudante Alidoro Chenda encantou a turma com danças contemporâneas, músicas e costumes angolanos, destacando as celebrações de matrimónio do país;
- Cabo Verde (20/02): A convidada Janissa Ramos, natural da Ilha de Santiago, guiou os participantes por um tour virtual pelas paisagens, história e tradições do arquipélago carbo-verdiano;
- Guiné-Bissau (27/02): José Menjur mostrou a diversidade étnica e a beleza natural do seu país, reforçando a importância da diversidade linguística e cultural;
- Moçambique (17/03): A aula ganhou sabor com a oficina culinária da estudante Natércia Jonas, que ensinou a preparar o Frango de Coco, enquanto discutia vocabulário e curiosidades locais;
- São Tomé e Príncipe (03/04): Kwame Alegre levou a turma a conhecer as praias paradisíacas, a cultura crioula e a história única do menor país falante de português.
O Projeto Conexões Culturais reforça o papel da USJ como promotora de uma educação intercultural e inclusiva, alinhada aos desafios globais. Ao aproximar estudantes de diferentes realidades, a iniciativa não apenas enriquece o conhecimento académico, mas também consolida a universidade como um espaço de diálogo entre as culturas. A expectativa é que novos ciclos do projeto ampliem ainda mais essa troca de saberes.
