“DIVERSAS” showcases 30 projects from the courses of the Associate Diploma in Portuguese-Chinese Translation Studies, the Bachelor in Portuguese-Chinese Translation Studies and the Bachelor in Portuguese-Chinese Studies (Language and Culture) for the academic year 2022-2023.

The exhibition “DIVERSAS – Diversity in Portuguese-Chinese Translation”, organised by the Department of Language and Culture of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), was officially opened on 27 September 2023 at the Kent Wong Exhibition Hall B/1 in USJ Ilha Verde Campus.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by honorable guest Mr. Carlos Roberto Xavier, Head of the Department of Tertiary Education of Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), and members of the USJ, including Vice-Rector Prof. Keith Morrisson, Administrator Dr. Alejandro Salcedo, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Prof. Carlos Sena Caires,  Head of the Department of Languages and Culture Prof. Tânia Ribeiro Marques, Prof. Nuno Rocha, and Ms. Camila Oliveira Macêdo.

“DIVERSAS – Diversity in Portuguese-Chinese Translation” is a multifaceted display of intercultural and linguistic dialogue between Portuguese and Chinese. This exhibition showcases 30 projects from the courses of the Associate Diploma in Portuguese-Chinese Translation Studies, the Bachelor in Portuguese-Chinese Translation Studies and the Bachelor in Portuguese-Chinese Studies (Language and Culture) for the academic year 2022-2023. Each work reflects the diversity of these two very different languages, exploring the translation and interpretation of texts, covering various genres, themes, and fields of knowledge. The diversity on display reflects the linguistic richness and the cultural, social, and historical differences between the Sino-Lusophone worlds.

DIVERSAS invites visitors to explore and discover the plurality of meanings and perspectives that arise throughout the process of teaching and learning languages. Each piece in the exhibition is a testimony to the challenge of translating not only words but also contexts, ideas, and feelings between such rich cultures and traditions.

This event is an opportunity to see the work and creativity of the students, and to reflect on the importance of intercultural dialogue in building a more inclusive and harmonious world. The exhibition is an invitation to reflect on the role of translation in bringing worlds closer together, in understanding other cultures, and in building bridges between people and nations.

The exhibition is open to the public from 27 September to 20 October 2023, on Monday to Friday (9am – 7pm), and Saturday (10am – 2pm), at the basement of the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery, except public holidays.
