Professors, staff, and students from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) participated in the Marine and Environmental Science and Technology Exchange and Study Tour to the Research Platforms in the Greater Bay Area (MESTEX) on 25 to 26 September 2023.
In a 2-day exchange and study tour in Zhuhai sponsored by the Macao Foundation, professors, staff, and students from Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) ventured into various wetlands as part of the Marine and Environmental Science and Technology Exchange and Study Tour to the Research Platforms in the Greater Bay Area (MESTEX) on 25 to 26 September 2023. Their destinations included Qi Ao Island and Hengqin Erjingwan Wetland Park, where they experienced the intricacies of wetland biodiversity and learned about the vital role of conservation measures in sustaining these ecosystems.
While exploring Qi Ao’s mangroves and associated fauna, the group observed a greater diversity of mangrove species compared to Macao, providing valuable insights for comparison. They also explored the role of mangroves in fisheries and their impact on freshwater and marine environments. In Erjingwan Park, guided by professors and staff from United International College Zhuhai, the group received briefings on successful conservation strategies and management practices that enhance the biodiversity of insects, birds, and other species.
This regular immersive experience for staff and students aimed to deepen understanding of the complex ecosystems in wetlands and highlight the crucial importance of conservation efforts in preserving these natural freshwater and coastal habitats.
