The Institute of Science and Environment at USJ (ISE/USJ) hosted a microplastic analysis workshop as part of the ongoing WASH 2025 project—“Green Shields Initiative: Mangroves as a Nature-Based Solution for a Resilient Macao.”
The Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) hosted an engaging microplastic analysis workshop on Saturday, 12 April 2025, as part of the ongoing WASH 2025 project—“Green Shields Initiative: Mangroves as a Nature-Based Solution for a Resilient Macao.”
Held in collaboration with Macau Green Future, the workshop welcomed Sands China Eco Ambassadors to analyse microplastic contamination in various water samples collected from across Macau, including household tap water, coastal waters, and even cosmetic products.
The event opened with insightful presentations by Prof. Karen Tagulao, Principal Investigator of USJ’s Drop by Drop project, and Dr. Muhammad Bashir Saidu, both of whom shared their expertise on microplastic pollution and its environmental impacts. Their talks highlighted the growing threat of microplastics in aquatic systems and emphasised the potential role of mangrove ecosystems in filtering these pollutants.
Participants also gained hands-on experience using laboratory techniques to extract microplastics from different sample types. The workshop underscored the value of collaboration between academic institutions, corporate sustainability programs like Sands Eco360, and NGOs such as Green Future in tackling Macau’s environmental challenges.
“This workshop represents an important step in our efforts to understand and mitigate microplastic pollution in Macau’s water systems,” said a spokesperson from Sands Eco360. “The knowledge gained today will directly support our Green Shields project with USJ, which explores how mangrove ecosystems can serve as natural filters for various pollutants, including microplastics.”
The WASH 2025 / Green Shields initiative continues to promote research into nature-based solutions for enhancing environmental resilience in Macau, with more collaborative events scheduled throughout the year.
