Macau Higher Education Institutions Committee for the Promotion of Gender Equality Developing Anti-Sexual-Harassment Policy and Procedural Frameworks
Macau Daily report, April 9. The Macau HEI Committee for the Promotion of Gender Equality, which was set up by representatives from all ten higher education institutions in Macau last September, has developed a Policy Framework for the Promotion of Gender Equality and the Prevention of Sexual Harassment. The Committee recommends that the HEIs may take into consideration of their needs when they make use of this policy framework in developing their own polices. Recently the Committee discussed the Working Procedures for the Handling of Sexual Harassment Incidents that had been drafted by Prof. Vincent Yang, Pro-Rector of USJ.
According to Pro-Rector Yang, the Committee formed by the ten HEIs has received significant support from GAES, which demonstrates that the MSAR government pays attention to the protection of gender equality and encourages the HEIs to take effective measures in dealing with any incident of sexual harassment. The policy framework above was jointly developed by Prof. Ieong, Director of Rector’s Office of UM and Pro-Rector Yang of USJ based on the policies and experience of these two universities. The Committee has had detailed discussions of the framework and decided to adopt it. The framewok includes the basic principles and standards of gender equality in HEIs, as well as the responsibilities and measures for the prevention and investigation of sexual harassment. The Committee will recommend the Procedures to the HEIs as a document of guidance or reference for the development of their internal procedures.
