On October 19, 2024, the USJ-Kong Hon Academy for Cellular Nutrition and Health, the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Macao Jianghan Biomedical Technology Development Group Co. Ltd., and Huajian Pharmaceutical, jointly organised the Natural Functional Food R&D Exchange Conference and KB-120 Cell Nutrient Sino-Portuguese R&D Cooperation Launch Ceremony at the Wynn Palace Conference Hall. The event was supported by Wynn Macao.
The event was organised under the theme of ‘Portugal-Macao Health Integration’ in order to give full play to the function of China-Portuguese Business Co-operation Service Platform, and to respond to the Macao SAR Government’s efforts to promote the ‘1+4’ economic diversification and to strengthen the construction of Chinese medicine and healthcare talent teams in the Greater Bay Area as well as in Macao, so as to promote regional exchanges among industries, academics and research institutes.
This event was organised to promote the role of the China and Portuguese-speaking countries trade cooperation service platform under the overarching theme of “Health Integration between Portugal and Macao”. It responds to the Macao SAR government’s initiative for moderate economic diversification through the “1+4” strategy, enhancing the development of a talent pool in traditional Chinese medicine and health sectors in the Greater Bay Area and Macao.
A memorandum of cooperation (MOU) was signed between the USJ-Kong Hon Academy for Cellular Nutrition and Health, the Macao Kong Hon Biomedical Technology Development Group, and Huajian Pharmaceutical, marking the establishment of an important platform for the research and development of natural functional foods. This collaboration aims to advance industry-academia-research development in this field, further solidifying the growth of Macao’s health industry.
The event featured a roundtable discussion led by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Jacky Ho, who invited key figures such as Mr Shi Huang-ji, General Director of Huajian Medicine, and Dr Kong Hon, initiator of the KB-120 Cell Nutrition and Anti-Aging Technology Research Program, to engage in discussions. The participants explored topics including development trends, research innovations, and market prospects for natural functional foods.
In the conference, Dr Kong Hon suggested the Macao general public have an extended mindset to assimilate products from Industry-academia-research. “People should use nutrition as a criterion, and eat nutritious food rather than delicious food. I think Macau has to cultivate the publicity of science, because it is necessary to reach out to the community, to our schools, so that more young people and residents can understand the knowledge of nutrition.” He added. In addition, they also mentioned that the research and development of KB-120 Cell Nutrition is in line with the Macau SAR Government’s policy and strategy of promoting the Healthy Macau Blueprint, which provides a new way to enhance human health.
Speeches were delivered during the launch ceremony by notable guests, including Paulo Quaresma, Vice-Rector of the University of Évora in Portugal; Wang Dahong, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Institute of Cell Nutrition and Health Research and head of the Market Working Committee of the China Health Association; and Zou Wenyu, Chief Marketing Officer of Wynn Macao.
During his speech, Prof. Paulo Quaresma, Vice-Rector at University of Évora, said “Évora is a small and ancient city with an increasing number of people who live longer, but they are not necessarily healthier and happier lives. It is expected that KB120 will be more internationalised, so that residents of Portugal, and even the whole of Europe, can also benefit.”
